CHAPTER 9

On the ride to Sperling’s Spot, Tim wondered how difficult it had become for Kelly. He knew she had had high hopes for forming a solid relationship with Ernesto. Adding him to the suspect list for Liza’s death had to sting more than she was willing to admit. That caused him to wonder about his actions if Tweetie was ever tagged as a suspect in a big crime. Would he find the strength to keep working if it meant prison for Tweetie? He didn’t want to answer that question. He was afraid he would be found wanting.

“You know,” Kelly said, “I hate to think of Ernesto as a killer, but I can’t be swayed by my own emotions. We have to follow the clues. He wanted Liza’s space. What would he do to get it?”

“That’s the key,” Tim said. “How far was Ernesto willing to go to ensure success for his restaurant? We’ve both seen people murdered for far less.”

“The problem is,” Kelly said, “that we don’t know much about Ernesto. I mean, he was a dance partner at a wedding. Beyond that, it’s mostly conjecture and what little he’s been willing to say. You know what? What a woman needs is some kind of character evaluation app.”

“What?” Tim asked. “How would that work?”

“A friend of mine writes stories,” Kelly said. “They’re not great stories, but they’re stories. She has to make up characters that look and sound like real people. So, she uses these character questionnaires. It’s a dozen pages that chart everything about a character, from the scar over his left eyebrow to his preference for steak tartar. There are at least a hundred questions she has to answer. When she’s done, she has a fictional character that has all the traits and talents of a real person. It’s pretty cool, actually.”

“So, you want Ernesto to fill out a questionnaire?”

“Yeah, that would be great. Oh, I know there are dating apps where people lie through their teeth to make themselves more attractive, but I would want something with more depth. In fact, I think it would be helpful if the app gained access to the person’s computer. A thorough scrubbing of their Internet searches would provide a wealth of information. I mean, what if the person likes to watch videos of dwarf tossing.”

“Dwarf tossing? What’s that?”

“It’s sort of like a game or sport that occurs in pubs. A dwarf or tiny person is fitted out with a helmet and special suit and literally tossed as far as possible. Sometimes, they’re thrown against a wall, there they stick. The dwarf gets paid a nice sum of money, but he or she has to go through a lot.”

“You’re kidding.”

“Nope. There’s also a blanket version, where a bunch of people use a blanket to throw a dwarf high in the air. Don’t ask me how people think up these things. Alcohol can fuel a lot of crazy ideas.”

“Famous last words...hold my beer.”

Kelly laughed, and Tim understood why. Drinking sometimes turned cowards into the foolhardy.
